Do Faith and Politics Mix?

Do Faith and Politics Mix?

Does Faith affect Politics? Should Faith affect Politics?

Politicians want votes. They don’t like to upset a large section of voters. When it comes to faith and politics, many of them sit on the fence. Sometimes they play the ‘God Card’, but don’t want to commit themselves too heavily in case it alienates the non-believers, and most of them don’t know how to play it properly anyway. It leaves the voters confused. What do the politicians really think?

Should God be involved? C.S Lewis put it very succinctly when he said that we only have two choices;

             a. God is real and therefore he means everything.

         or b. God is not real and therefore he means nothing.

There is not a third, fourth, fifth choice. Unfortunately we live in a society where we think that we are entitled to choose. People tend to operate on the basis that there is a sliding scale between God existing and not existing. They like to decide where on the line they sit. In doing so, they create God in their own image (as opposed to the fact that we were created in his image). They create their own God, deciding what he thinks and how he acts, usually based on their experience of life and other people.

Politicians are particularly adept at doing this. They will claim to believe in God, but then vote for a change in law that is not Godly. They just change their God a little bit to suit their own beliefs. The real problem is that even though they believe in him, they have never taken the time to get to know him. They don’t know how he thinks, because they don’t know him, they only know about him.

As I wrote above there are only two choices. If God doesn’t exist, then it means nothing. How can God be involved in politics if he doesn’t exist? All that is left  to decide is if the individual voter likes the policies and the way the country is being run.

However, if God does exist, then he means everything. Can you say to him;

“Look God, I know you created the universe and are all powerful, but come on, this is politics, so butt out mate.”

We are told in the Bible that God even knows how many hairs we have on our heads. He cares about every single aspect of our lives. He wants to spend eternity with us (and that is brave, because there are some people I can’t imagine living with forever!). He loves us completely and utterly, so much so that he sent his Son to die for us. That same Son spent his time on earth talking to us about how we should live our lives. Why would he not be interested in politics? Where do we get off thinking that it is none of his business?

If you don’t believe in God, then no, faith and politics don’t mix. However, if you do believe in God, then of course faith and politics mix.

The question to answer should be ‘Do you believe in God’. If the answer is yes, then start mixing your faith and politics.
