Recognising an attack

Recognising an attack

To defeat a spiritual attack, you first have to recognise it.

As we said in the introduction, many bad things that happen in life are unfortunate, but sometimes it is a spiritual attack.

Satan hates everybody and we all have a target on our back, especially Christians. Sometimes that target starts flashing and attracts attention. It might do this if you are trying to move forward in your faith or achieve something worthwhile.  The Bible warns us to be careful;

      “Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

We are told that he is prowling around. Your target might be flashing and attracting his attention, but he also comes around for a look every so often. If you have any open doors in your life through which he can gain entry, he is straight in there. He does not play fair; he will attack by any fowl means he can devise. He particularly likes to kick you when you are down.

If you are under attack it needs to be recognised and dealt with using the appropriate weapons. We have to use spiritual weapons to fight a spiritual attack.

However, before using the appropriate weapons you need to recognise that it is spiritual. A spiritual attack is different in nature to ordinary day to day life. Look for the following circumstances or characteristics.
• You, or someone close to you are;
    1. Trying to move forward in your faith, for example starting to go to church.
    2. Involved in a Christian project, particularly a groundbreaking one.
    3. Helping other Christians or people making a difference.
    4. Making changes for the better to your life or behaviour.
• Something happening completely out of the blue.
• Things seem unreasonable or irrational.
• A series of things going wrong that seem too much to be coincidence.
• Timing coinciding with something important.
• You seem to be behaving out of character.
• Somebody else suddenly behaves out of character.
• A moment of madness when irrational thoughts come into your mind.
• Feelings such as fear or hate or even lust overtake you for no reason.
• Something that never bothered you before suddenly drives you mad.
• A stranger (or sometimes even a friend) verbally attacks you for no real reason.
• Overwhelming temptation in an area of weakness that you thought was under control
• Strange pains in your body.
• Strange thoughts in your head.
• Several people in a short space of time criticise you.
• Sudden accidents to yourself or close family, particularly if timed to coincide with an important event.

As I have said earlier, unfortunate things do happen and not everything is a spiritual attack. A spiritual attack will seem odd and sometimes seem to have a life of its own. Often you might find yourself thinking ‘what on earth is going on here?’.

If you do think you are under spiritual attack in any area of your life, read the advice here, but also ask other people to pray with you.
