Day 45

Day 45

Lean not on your own understanding.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5

When it comes to losing weight we are bombarded with lots of different information. Some diets say you have to count calories, others argue that it is fat or carbohydrates, some have free foods and others have you accounting for everything that you eat. Sometimes it depends on your blood group, or the shape of your body or face. We’ve all had friends that have lost weight on a certain diet; we wonder whether we should try it. Until, that is, we meet them again and they have put it all back on.

It is all incredibly confusing and to make matters worse, just when you think you understand it all, another report comes out and the advice changes. For years, the recommended number of daily calories has remained the same, but recently a new report has argued that the number is too low and is actually hindering weight loss.

Over the last few decades we have progressed enormously in our understanding of the human body. The problem with humans is that we are very arrogant. We always think that at any one point in time we know everything, and then we learn something new and we think ‘Oh, now we know everything’. This has been going on for most of our history. You would think that we would have learned by now that actually we don’t understand nearly as much as we think we do.

Here’s a question! If we know so much about the body and diets, how come there are more overweight people than there ever have been? The reason is this; we do not know nearly as much as we think we know and we are messing about with things that we don’t understand. We are leaning on our own understanding and failing miserably. It’s time to lean on God.

God knows everything there is to know about the human body because he created it. He also knows everything there is to know about each individual body. We are not all the same. God loves variety, just look around you. Each person on this earth is an individual; no two people are identical. That is why there is not a ‘one fits all’ solution.

Read the above scripture again. If we trust God with everything we have and do, seeking his will, then he will direct our path. This includes food. God knows what is best for us, he is a far better judge of what we should eat than we or anyone else is. It is for this reason that we must turn our eating over to him.

How do we do that? We ask him to help and guide us at all times. If you are not used to asking God for guidance, it may seem strange, even difficult at first. You must persevere; God never refuses a request for help. He is always working on your behalf, even if it doesn’t seem like it. Sometimes it is a case of tuning in your hearing. Radio waves are all around us and the radio may be working properly, but it does need tuning to the right wavelength. It’s like that with God. We have to tune ourselves to hear him. It may take time and practice, especially because sometimes you may not want to hear what he has to say! In the end though, it is worth it. Trusting and leaning on God is a far better way to live.

Today

Next time you want something to eat, ask God to show you what to eat.
