Day 47

Day 47

Five a day.

Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-baring plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit on it. They will be yours for food’. Genesis 1:29

And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground; trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. Genesis 2:9

After God created Adam and Eve he gave them fruit and vegetables to eat. God clearly thought that this was healthy and sufficient for their needs. He did not give them meat to eat until after the flood.

Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. Genesis 9:3

It’s not clear why God suddenly decided that it was okay to eat meat. It may have something to do with the fact that up until this point animals had not been afraid of humans. After the flood God said that fear and dread of man would fall upon the animals. Maybe it was because a lot of trees and plants had been destroyed in the flood. We don’t know. However we do know that for many years fruit and vegetables were enough.

In the United Kingdom we are advised to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. God impressed upon me that I didn’t eat enough fruit and vegetables. They are good foods that he has provided for us. I once fasted for two weeks, eating only fruit. I was absolutely fine. I felt very healthy; the only struggle was the temptation to want other foods because I wasn’t allowed them.

When we go on a diet we focus on taking foods out, eating less. However, God told me to start by putting the healthy foods in first. He told me to focus on putting fruit and vegetables into my daily diet. This way I was thinking about what I should have, rather than what I couldn’t have. One of the reasons that diets fail is that as soon as you are told you can’t have something, you want it. That is human nature.

Our bodies need fruit and vegetables. As we eat more of them and they provide essential nutrients and fill us up, we will find the desire for other foods starts to fade naturally.

Have you ever thought, “I know I should have an apple, but I really want a biscuit?” This is one of the reasons that lifetime dieters struggle with fruit and vegetables. They see them as the enemy because they are supposed to have them instead of the food they really want. From now on, whenever you feel like that, have both. Make sure you put the fruit in. Don’t deny yourself the biscuit or you will become obsessed with it. The desire for the biscuit will fade over time as you become free in your eating and start listening to your body.

Today

Make sure you eat five portions of fruit and vegetables.
