Day 15

Day 15

Let Go!

What does it mean to let go? It means surrendering your will to God and letting him take charge. If we want God to help us lose weight, we have got to let go.

The opposite of letting go is trying to control everything. We usually do this in one of two ways.

1. We work ourselves into a frenzy trying to keep all life’s balls in the air. We daren’t stop juggling or else we will drop one and there is no way we will have time to pick it up. If we are struggling, we think it is simply a matter of trying harder (those words again), thinking ahead more and being better organised. We struggle to relax, afraid that if we come down we might not get back up again. Often, the only way to relax seems to be through alcohol, but even this is a lie because alcohol is a stimulant.
The most amazing thing about keeping so many balls in the air is that the one we drop is often our own health. So many people can do and achieve so much, but they can’t control their own eating. I personally am surrounded by so many successful women who are overweight. They are wonderful mothers, devoted wives, run their own businesses or have high powered jobs etc, but they can’t control their own weight. Why is this? The reason is that actually we only think we are in control. We are actually being controlled by life. So when we approach our eating problems, we do so in an already out of control state and it is easy for food to jump on the band wagon and control us.

The world has a word for the above....stress! God has a word for it....pride! We think that we can do it all ourselves. That’s pride. The Bible tells us that pride comes before a fall. Each time we approach a diet thinking that it is simply a matter of self-control, we set ourselves up for a fall. The good news is that God is waiting to catch us.

2. We give up. Giving up is another way of trying to be in control. This might seem strange to you, but think about it for a moment. When you give up, you have made the decision that it is not going to work, so there is no point in trying. You are still trying to control the situation.
Giving up often leads to depression. Have you ever noticed how many seriously stressed people end up depressed? They are both really the same thing, they just present a different face to the outside world.

The answer is to let go. Letting go is accepting that you cannot do it yourself, but realising that God can. It means setting aside your pride and saying “Okay God, I’ll let you do this and I will cooperate with you”.

Jesus and his mother both let go. Let’s start with Mary:

Here’s a young girl going about her business when all of a sudden an angel appears,

He says....”Hiya love, guess what you’re gonna have a baby and it will be God’s son”

She says..”I don’t think so mate, I’m still a virgin”.

He says....”Never mind that, God’s gonna sort it”.

She then says one of the most important things in the whole Bible:  " If that’s what you say, then so be it”

Mary let go and surrendered to God, even though she didn’t understand and there were so many potential problems. (Future hubby for one)

Before his betrayal, while praying at the Mount of Olives, Jesus was in anguish because he knew what was coming, but he still said to God, “not my will, but yours be done”.

Think where we might be today if Mary and Jesus had not let go. It’s time for you to walk into the future that God has for you by letting go. Give your eating problems to God.

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you”. 1 Peter 5:7

In the above verse we are told to give our problems to God. This means giving them to him, leaving them with him (not snatching them back) and trusting him to deal with them.

It’s worth looking at the verse before the above:

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore..”

Before we are told to cast our cares, we are told to humble ourselves. Do not be too proud to ask for help.

Let go!

Today

Every time you face a problem or temptation with food, humble yourself and ask God for help. Hold out your hands, mentally place the problem in them, screw it up into a ball and throw it up to God. He will catch it and deal with him.

In the meantime you can begin to enjoy life, because now you are letting go, you can be assured that God has you covered.
